TRAINING
Seminar Description
Course Objectives – Course participants will:
• demonstrate an understanding of the process of normal reading development
and the relationship to oral language development
• develop an understanding of recent research findings in the area of
reading and implications for the classroom
• develop an understanding of how to incorporate phonemic awareness
training into reading instruction within the classroom setting
• be able to teach letter sound associations using mnemonics, imagery,
and oral kinesthetic cueing techniques
• be able to perform sound blending, segmentation, and tracking activities
for decoding and encoding
• develop techniques for training the acquisition of phonetically irregular
sight words
• develop an understanding of techniques to increase automaticity and
fluency for oral reading using a variety of methods
• develop an understanding of how to teach multisyllable decoding and
encoding skills, utilizing syllabication and structural analysis techniques
• develop the ability to perform selected informal diagnostic screening
tasks to identify students at risk for reading disabilities
• demonstrate incorporation of learned strategies into the classroom
setting
Class Format -Involves instruction through
• lecture
• material demonstrations
• videos
• hands-on practice
• interactive discussions
